Mar 12

Male: Curtis Austring, Saskatchewan (Hockey)
Junior forward Curtis Austring of the Saskatchewan Huskies has been named the Canada West Athlete of the Week and men’s hockey Player of the Week for the week ending March 11.

The 6’1’’, 200-pound Commerce student from Stewart Valley, SK scored five points to pace the fifth-ranked Huskies to the 2006-07 Canada West hockey championship with a two-game-to-one series victory over the No. 2 Alberta Golden Bears at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton, March 9-11.

After being held scoreless in a 2-1 loss in the series opener on Friday, the Saskatchewan assistant captain was a one-man wrecking crew in Game 2 on Saturday. Austring scored all three Saskatchewan goals as the Huskies rallied to tie the series at 1-1 with a 3-2 victory in triple overtime. He scored once in the second period and sent the game into overtime with the tying goal at 16:05 of the third period. It was almost 40 minutes before he completed his first hat-trick of the season with the game-winning goal at 9:16 of the third overtime period, ending the longest game in Canada West hockey playoff history at 99:16.

In the third and deciding game of the series on Sunday, Austring helped Saskatchewan claim its 14th conference title and first since 1999-00 with a two-assist performance.

With the five point series, Austring claimed the conference playoff scoring title with 3-4-7 in five games. Overall, he has scored 13-20-33 in 36 games. The Huskies eliminated the two-time defending CIS champions and now advance to their 12th University Cup tournament in Moncton, NB, March 22-25, in search of their second national championship and first since 1983, also at Moncton.
